Recycling Banks

Avoid making a special trip to the recycling banks. Try to make sure that you combine your visit with other errands or on your way to somewhere else. In this way, the environmental benefits of recycling are complemented by reduced vehicle journeys! When using banks, remember to take all bags and boxes home with you.  Do not leave anything outside the recycling containers - doing so is fly tipping.

Saucepans

Sharps (hypodermic needles)

• See Hazardous waste.

Shoes

• Donate good condition shoes to charity and second-hand shops.

• Tie in pairs and put in Salvation Army Textile Bank in the Spendlove Car Park, Charlbury.

• Tie in pairs and put in your black box.

Spectacles

• Most opticians have spectacles recycling schemes.

• Take old spectacles to Boots Opticians in Witney for Vision Aid collections. They are reused in Developing countries, giving somebody a gift of clearer vision.

Sewing Machines

• Take all types of sewing machine to John Lanyon (01608 811035 for info) to be refurbished by Tools For Self Reliance, who send them on to communities in developing countries.

Slates

• See Architectural salvage.

• Use as garden edging – broken slate can be used for decorative garden mulch.

Soap boxes

• Get on your soap box and tell your family and friends to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste (you can lobby your local shop, too)!

• Avoid plastic shower gel bottles by using soap kept in a reusable soapbox.

String

• Put in Compost if it is made of natural materials (not nylon or metallic).

Tea bags

• See Compost.

Telephone Directories

• Since 2009, ALL telephone directories INCLUDING Yellow pages can go in your black box.

• You can cancel your paper telephone directories and use the on-line versions, if everyone did this the resources saved would be mind boggling enormous. Cancel your BT Directory (or order one) by phoning Freephone 0800 833 400 Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm. Cancel Yellow Pages (or order one) by phoning Freefone 0800 671 444. Cancel Thomson Local (or order one) by phoning 01252 555 555 Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 5.30pm.

Tetra Paks

• Containers for Tetra Paks installed in all County Council Recycling Centres - including Dean Pit - in August 2007. All beverage cartons containing milk, juice, soups, custards, sauces etc can be included. Rinse them out and flattened them by pulling out the ears. The plastic opening devices can be cut off to flat pack the cartons.

• Take Tetra Paks to the CAWAG collection bag next to the Green Waste trailer at Spendlove Car Park, Charlbury, the first Saturday morning of each month from 10am-12 noon.

Textiles

• Take to textiles banks, charity shops, Spendlove Car Park, Charlbury.

• Fabric off-cuts can be taken to textile banks if they can’t be used to make soft toys, cushion covers, etc.

• Put in your black box.

• Burford Animal Sanctuary – for clean, threadbare, holey fabric (towels and old blankets) where they are used for animal bedding.

• Fabric samples – Orinoco Oxfordshire Scrapstore uses these for community art projects (01865 761113).

Tiles

Orinoco Oxfordshire Scrapstore takes clean unwanted ceramic tiles to use for community mosaic projects (Orinoco, Bullingdon Community Centre, Peat Moors, Oxford (01865 761113)).

Timber

• See Garden waste.

Restore Elder Stubbs Rymers Lane, opposite Florence Park, Cowley (01865 747176) will accept timber in good condition. Restore Elder Stubbs is a charitable organisation for people with mental health issues – their wood recycling project makes flat-pack and garden furniture from good quality timber (available for sale).

Pathway Workshop, Dunnock Way, Blackbird Leys (01865 714111) will accept unwanted new timber. Pathway is a charity which provides work for disabled people, they make garden furniture, compost bins, etc. and sell them on-line.

Oxford Wood Recycling, Unit 46a Milton Park, Abingdon collects and sells recycled timber (01235 861228).

Toiletries

• Take to The Gap Project (01865 201818), 23 Park Street, Oxford. They provide resettlement help to homeless people.

• Take to the Oxford Night Shelter (01865 304600), Luther Street, Oxford.

Tools (carpentry and metalworking)

• Good condition carpentry and metalworking tools can be taken to John Lanyon (01608 811035 for info) to be refurbished by Tools For Self Reliance, who send them on to communities in developing countries. They can also be deposited in the Tools For Self Reliance container at Redbridge Waste Recycling Centre, off Abingdon Road, Oxford.

• Save for a Charlbury "Bring and Take". These are held in the Memorial Hall on the second Saturday morning in both March and October.  Items can be brought along between 9.30am until 11am and taken between 10am and 12 noon.

Tools (garden)

• Good quality garden tools can be taken to John Lanyon (01608 811035) or directly to Bridewell Organic Gardens at Wilcote (01993-868445) near Finstock. Bridewell is an award winning charity based in a walled garden and five-acre vineyard, their objective is to improve the emotional well being of adults who have suffered from a range of health problems, primarily mental illness.

• Broken garden tools can be deposited in the scrap metal container for recycling at Dean or Redbridge Waste Recycling Centres.

• Broken plastic garden tools (strimmers, etc) have to go in the landfill waste skip at Dean Waste Recycling Centre.

Toxic waste

• Return to retailer for spare parts.

• Donate good bicycle tyres to The Oxford Cycle Workshop, 39 Magdalene Road, Oxford OX4 1RB (01865 204799).

Tyres (car & motorbike)

• Take to Dean or Redbridge Waste Recycling Centres – you will be charged £2.50 for this service.

• Take to Fraser Evans, Down Road, Witney for shredding (there may be a charge) 01993 700 887.
