Local Meal & Food Inc Film 2010

About 50 people came to the Memorial Hall in Charlbury on Saturday 24 July for a meal sourced from local gardens followed by a showing of the film Food Inc.
The sit-down meal in the Garden Room was lovely and really show-cased what great food is available in our gardens in July even in this very dry summer - anyone could grow the food we were eating to feed their own families at this time of year. Our meal was a stark contrast to the American food industry we found out about in the film which was very disturbing. However, the important message to take away from the film is that we all have choices when we buy food and that these choices WILL determine how the food industry reacts. The Meal
- Swiss Chard, Courgette and Ham and Tomato Quiches
- Warm Charlotte potatoes with flat-leaved parsley and butter
- French bean, broad bean and courgette salad with honey, mustard and garlic dressing
- Tomato and basil salad
- Green salad with lettuce, cucumber, mint, chives, summer savoury, marjoram, basil
- Salad dressing with rapeseed oil, honey, mustard, sea salt, pepper
- Summer puddings and pavlova with compote of redcurrants, blackcurrants, gooseberries, & loganberries and garnished with raspberries
- Rhubarb cake (lots of rhubarb recipes on the Riverford website)
- Yoghurt, Cream, Soya Cream, Oatly Cream

This was a collaborative event between ChOC, Sustainable Charlbury, and CAWAG. Thanks to everyone who helped: Jane for preparing the lovely food; Catherine for the flowers for the tables; Richard and Forbes for doing the chairs; Louise on the door; Jon, Philip and Jenny for the bar; Frances, Carina & Jenny for serving the food; St Mary's for use of plates and cutlery; Leah and Christine for use of tablecloths; Mike for the loan of the projection equipment and Colin for being the projectionist; and ALL who helped to dismantle everything at the end. You all made it a wonderful community event.

Review from Transition Culture "Ultimately this is a hopeful film. Yes the food system is extremely powerful, but as the film says, so was the tobacco industry. The movement of local, organic, unprocessed food continues to grow. As one farmer interviewed in the film says “people have got to start demanding good wholesome food from us and we’ll deliver, I promise you”. ‘Food Inc.’ lays bare the fact that our food system, the most basic thing for a society to get right, has been hijacked, and is making us and the planet very, very sick. Hopefully this passionate, inspiring and powerful film will play a key role in the scaling back and replacing of industrial agriculture. Highly recommended."
