Electrical equipment

You can now dispose of your unwanted electrical equipment in a more environmentally friendly way thanks to a new Government directive called WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment regulations). It will reduce the amount of electrical and electronic goods going to landfill.  Anything from old toasters and stereos through to washing machines can be taken to your nearest designated WEEE site - which is the Waste Recycling Centre at Dean. Here they will be reclaimed for refurbishment or recycling. The service is FREE for the consumer, however the producer of the equipment will be responsible for financing the collection, treatment, and recovery of waste electrical equipment.

• For unwanted items in good working order see if someone else could use them in your community. If not try various Oxfordshire virtual swap-shop websites at Oxford Freecycle, Witney Freecycle, or Chipping Norton Freecycle.

We cannot take electrical items at Bring & Takes, so please do not bring them along.

If items are in working order then phone OCVA on 01865-763698 (Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action, Westlands Drive, Headington, Oxford).

Take items to Bannor Electrical, 5 West Street, Chipping Norton who will test them, repair if appropriate, and sell them on with proceeds going to charity.

• If items are beyond repair then West Oxfordshire District Council can arrange collection, phone 01993-861020. In May 2008, the charge was £7.20 for up to 4 items.
