West Oxfordshire District Council collect your household waste and have a good summary to explain what you can put in your recycling box and a PDF in more detail.

The Oxfordshire County Council are responsible for disposal of the landfill and their website also has a useful A-Z guide to recycling.

In May 2008, CAWAG published a Quick Guide to "Reduce, Reuse & Recycle" for Charlbury and distributed it to every household with the Charlbury Chronicle, with the aim of reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfill. This leaflet summarised and updated the key parts of the A-Z Directory which was put together by Charlbury Area Waste Action Group and Finstock Recycling Group in 2004, and the earlier A-Z Directory produced by CAWAG in 2002. The published information has come from a wide variety of sources and whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the information was correct at the time of going to print, the Charlbury Area Waste Action Group cannot be held responsible for its accuracy. The more detailed A-Z information on this website (see side menu) is regularly updated and comments and contributions are most welcome.

The facts:

  • Landfill sites are filling up in Oxfordshire. Soon there will be nowhere left to put our rubbish.
  • Every household currently creates around 1 tonne of rubbish a year.
  • Landfill produces methane, which creates global warming.
  • Rubbish in landfill produces toxic substances that can lead to contamination of land and water.
  • In 2002/3 37,000 tonnes of household waste was collected in West Oxon with only 5,000 tonnes of this being recycled.
  • In 2003, household rubbish produced by Oxfordshire’s residents increased by 2%.
  • By reducing, reusing and recycling, you can help to stop this happening!

If you are concerned about household rubbish, think about volunteering for Charlbury Area Waste Action Group.
